Photo Booths at Kids' Birthday Parties: What Works by Age

A photo booth at a kids' party works differently from one at a wedding or a corporate event. The guest list includes toddlers who won't sit still, school-age kids who'll want a hundred turns, parents trying to get one nice family photo and grandparents who want a print to take home. Get the booth and the plan right, and it's one of the most-loved parts of the party. Get it wrong, and it's a pile of props on the floor.

If you're wondering whether a photo booth makes sense at your child's party, here's what works at each age, plus safety, props and templates, and how a booth fits alongside a bouncy castle or snack machines. At a kids' birthday party, choose a print booth for young children and family, a 360 booth for kids aged about nine and up, keep props simple and safe, theme the template and time the booth before kids get tired.

    1. What works by age

    Age What works
First birthday and toddlers Digital booth with prints, mostly used by families
Ages 3–6 Digital booth with simple props and an attendant who helps
Ages 7–11 Digital booth with GIFs, or a 360 with a careful attendant
Ages 12+ 360 booth; preteens love making videos

For the youngest, the booth is really for the family. For older kids, it's the main event.

    2. First birthdays

A first birthday is often as much a family celebration as a kids' party, especially across the GTA's many multigenerational families. Grandparents, aunts and uncles want photos with the baby. A print booth with a template showing the baby's name and "One" is perfect, and a photo guest book becomes a first-year keepsake.

Open the booth early in the party, while the baby is rested and happy. Naps and meltdowns wait for no one.

For school-age kids, the booth can become a party activity in its own right. Ask the attendant to run a few themed rounds, such as "superhero poses" or "silliest face", and give every child a print to take home. It doubles as a party favour, which saves you buying loot bags.

    3. Props for kids

Kids grab props by the handful, so choose them carefully:

    • Big, light, soft props: oversized glasses, hats, crowns, capes
    • Character masks that don't cover the eyes
    • Signs with the birthday child's name and age
    • Nothing small enough to swallow, sharp or breakable

An attendant who hands out props, rather than leaving a free-for-all table, keeps things tidy and safe.

    4. Templates kids love

Match the template to the party theme: superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, space, a favourite show (avoid trademarked characters in the design unless you have the rights) or simply the birthday child's favourite colours. Include the name, age and date. Bright, bold designs work best.

    5. Safety first

With lots of excited kids around, safety matters:

    • An attendant who stays with the booth throughout
    • For a 360 booth: small groups, a slow spin, no jumping unless allowed and an adult nearby
    • Cables taped down and away from play areas
    • The booth placed away from the bouncy castle and running areas

See our 360 booth safety guide for more.

    6. Pairing with party rentals

Many GTA kids' parties combine a booth with a bouncy castle, a popcorn or cotton candy machine and balloon décor. They work well together: the castle burns energy, the snacks keep kids fuelled and the booth captures the fun. Make sure you have space and power for everything, since a bouncy castle blower and a booth may need separate outlets. See our kids' bouncy castle rental for castle options.

    7. Timing the booth

Kids' parties are shorter than adult events and run on energy levels. A two-hour booking usually covers it. Open the booth after arrivals and before cake, when kids are excited but not exhausted. A family photo session at the start, before the kids get messy, is a good idea too.

    8. Home, hall and indoor play spaces

Kids' parties happen at home, in community centre rooms, church halls and banquet hall party rooms across the GTA. Check the space, power and load-in time. For home parties, a cleared garage or covered patio is often the best booth spot. For outdoor parties, plan shade and a rain backup.

Afterwards, send parents the gallery link so they can download photos of their own kids from the party.

Example: a 7th birthday with a castle and a booth

Say your son is turning seven and his younger cousins are coming too. The bouncy castle suits the little ones (LUNO's castles are designed for ages 2 to 6), while a digital booth with superhero props keeps the seven-year-olds busy. Place them on opposite sides of the yard so the lines don't mix. Open the booth after the castle's first rush, and give every child a print as they leave. It doubles as the party favour.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a photo booth worth it for a toddler's birthday?

It's often more for the adults. Parents, grandparents and relatives use it most at first birthdays and toddler parties, and the prints make great keepsakes.

Are 360 booths safe for kids?

With a trained attendant limiting the number of kids, keeping the spin slow and an adult nearby, yes. For very young children, a digital booth is simpler.

Can we have a photo booth and a bouncy castle at the same party?

Yes, and it's a popular combination. The bouncy castle keeps kids busy and the booth gives families a keepsake. Check you have space and power for both.
