Milestone birthdays are the parties people plan big for. A 30th with friends at a Toronto lounge, a 40th in a Mississauga backyard, a 50th at a Brampton banquet hall or a 60th with three generations in a Vaughan restaurant all share one thing: they bring together people from every part of the guest of honour's life. School friends, coworkers, cousins and neighbours end up in the same room, often for the first time. A photo booth captures that in a way nothing else does.

If you're planning a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th birthday, here's how to choose a booth, theme and props that bring together people from every part of the guest of honour's life. For a milestone birthday photo booth, choose a booth that suits the age of the crowd, pick a decade or glam theme, design a template that celebrates the guest of honour and add a guest book so every guest leaves a message.

    1. Match the booth to the milestone

    Milestone Typical crowd Recommended booth
30th Friends, dance floor 360 booth or digital booth
40th Friends, family, coworkers Digital or 360 booth
50th Family, friends, some elders Digital or mirror booth with prints
60th and beyond Multigenerational family Digital or mirror booth with prints

At larger parties with a dance floor, adding a 360 booth beside a print booth gives everyone a keepsake.

The guest list for a milestone birthday often spans decades of friendship. Encourage groups to come up together: school friends, work friends, the cousins, the neighbours. The attendant can call each group to the booth, and those photos tell the story of the guest of honour's life.

    2. Pick a theme

Decade themes are the most popular choice for milestone birthdays:

    • The decade the guest of honour was born in
    • "Vintage" or "aged to perfection" for 50th and 60th parties
    • Black-and-gold glam for any age
    • A favourite movie, band or city

The theme guides backdrop, props and template, and gives guests a reason to dress up.

    3. Templates that celebrate the guest of honour

Put the guest of honour at the centre: their name, the milestone ("Fabulous at 50", "Dirty Thirty") and the date. A throwback photo from childhood or their twenties on the template is a fun touch that always gets a reaction. Keep text large so it reads on a print.

    4. Props for milestone parties

    • Age signs ("40 & Fabulous", "Officially Vintage")
    • Props from the guest of honour's birth decade: disco wigs, shoulder pads, mixtapes
    • Crowns and sashes for the guest of honour
    • Signs with inside jokes from friends and family

Ask close friends for sign ideas; personal jokes get the biggest laughs.

    5. Add a guest book

A photo guest book turns the booth into a birthday card from everyone at the party. Each guest adds a print and writes a message. An audio guest book captures voice messages, which are especially lovely at 60th and 70th birthdays when grandchildren and old friends leave memories. See audio guest book vs photo guest book.

    6. Timing the booth

Most milestone parties include arrivals, dinner, speeches or toasts, cake and then dancing or visiting. Open the booth after dinner, keep it running through cake and close it as the party winds down. For surprise parties, set up the booth before the guest of honour arrives and open it right after the surprise.

For surprise parties, the booth can play a role in the reveal itself. Some hosts place the booth near the entrance so the guest of honour's reaction is captured on the first photo of the night. Talk to the attendant about timing so the booth is ready the moment they walk in.

    7. Venues across the GTA

Milestone birthdays happen everywhere: banquet halls in Brampton and Vaughan, restaurant private rooms in Toronto and Mississauga, condo party rooms and backyards. Measure the space, check for power and confirm the venue's load-in time. For home parties, see our guide to outdoor photo booths in Ontario.

    8. Keep it inclusive for every generation

At 50th and 60th parties, some guests may prefer to sit. Keep a chair in the booth, make sure the attendant invites elders over early and offer props that are easy to hold. Those three-generation photos are often the most treasured from the night.

Afterwards, a gallery link sent to every guest makes a lovely thank-you from the guest of honour.

Example: a 60th with friends from five decades

Say you're throwing your father's 60th at a Brampton hall, with school friends, old colleagues and four grandchildren. Choose a digital booth with prints and a template that shows his childhood photo beside the booth photo. Ask the attendant to call up each group in turn: school friends, work friends, family. Add a photo guest book where everyone writes a memory. By the end of the night, the album tells the story of his life.

    Frequently asked questions

Which booth suits a 50th or 60th birthday?

A digital or mirror booth with prints suits most milestone birthdays, especially with older guests. A 360 booth works well at 30th and 40th parties with a dance floor.

Is a surprise party a problem for booking a photo booth?

Not at all. Just give the booth company a contact who isn't the guest of honour, and make sure the booth is set up before the surprise moment.

Can the template include an old photo of the birthday guest?

Often, yes. A childhood or throwback photo on the template is a fun touch. Send a good-quality scan and ask your booth company to include it in the design.
