Gender Reveal Party Ideas and Rentals in the GTA

A gender reveal is a short party with one big moment, and that moment lasts about five seconds. Everything else, from the guest list to the backdrop and the food, exists to make those seconds feel special and to make sure someone actually captures them. In the GTA, that usually means coordinating family across several cities, choosing between a backyard and a party room depending on the season, and planning around grandparents, cousins and friends who all want a good view.
If you're expecting and want a reveal party that feels joyful rather than stressful, here's how to plan the moment, the space and the rentals that help. For a gender reveal in the GTA, keep the secret with one trusted person, pick a reveal that's easy to see and photograph, set up a neutral backdrop for the moment, plan something for the kids and the treats, and check your venue's or city's rules before using confetti or smoke.
1. Decide who keeps the secret
Most parents ask their clinic to put the result in a sealed envelope, then hand it to one trusted person: a friend, a sibling, the baker or the décor company preparing the reveal. Fewer people in the loop means fewer accidental spoilers in the family group chat.
Agree early on whether you want to find out in private first or be surprised alongside everyone. Both work; just make sure the person holding the envelope knows which one you chose.
2. Pick a reveal guests can actually see
The best reveals are big, colourful and quick. Popular options include:
- Cutting a cake with a pink or blue filling
- Popping a large balloon or opening a balloon box
- Confetti poppers handed to the parents-to-be
- Coloured smoke at an outdoor party, where it's allowed
Whatever you choose, test how it looks in daylight or under your party room's lights, and make sure the colour is obvious from across the room. A pale filling that only the front row can see makes for a confusing moment.
3. Choose the venue for the season
Spring and summer reveals in the GTA often happen in backyards, which give room for kids, a bigger reveal and outdoor treats. From late fall to early spring, hosts move indoors: a condo party room, a restaurant private room, a community centre room or a basement.
Indoors, check ceiling height for balloons and any rules on confetti and glitter. Outdoors, have a rain plan, such as a tent or garage, and think about where the sun will be when you do the reveal so photos aren't washed out.
4. Set up a neutral backdrop
Many families decorate in neutral or mixed colours, such as white, sage, gold or a mix of pink and blue, so the décor doesn't give anything away. A balloon arch behind the reveal spot gives everyone a clear focal point and frames the photos.
LUNO designs balloon arches and garlands in your colours, quoted per event with installation included. Ask your décor company to keep the palette neutral, and if you want a balloon reveal, ask whether they can prepare one with the colour hidden until the moment.
5. Capture the reactions
The reveal itself is over quickly, but the reactions are what people want to rewatch. Assign one person to video the parents-to-be and another to film the guests. After the reveal, a photo booth keeps the celebration going and gives every guest a keepsake.
A booth placed beside the backdrop catches families in pink or blue props, and a 360 booth turns the excitement into short videos for sharing. LUNO's photo booth packages start from $800 for 3 hours, with an attendant, setup and teardown included. For more ideas, see our baby shower photo booth guide.
6. Plan something for the kids
Gender reveals tend to bring out nieces, nephews and young cousins. A bouncy castle keeps younger children busy while the adults talk, and it gives parents a natural reason to stay longer.
LUNO's kids' bouncy castles suit ages 2 to 6 and rent for $200 per full day ($250 for the Whimsical Castle), with delivery, setup and takedown included. Check your yard against our bouncy castle space guide before you book.
7. Keep the treats simple
A short party needs easy food: finger foods, the reveal cake and one fun treat. A popcorn or cotton candy machine works for every age and is quick to serve. LUNO's basic machine package is $175 per machine with supplies for up to 50 guests, and the cotton candy machine includes two flavours, so you can match them to your colours.
8. Put safety and neighbours first
Never use fireworks or homemade pyrotechnics for a reveal. Smoke products and confetti cannons can be fun outdoors, but keep them away from guests with asthma, small children and pets, and follow the instructions on the package. In parks, check your city's rules before you plan confetti or smoke, and bring bags for cleanup. In condos, ask building management first; smoke near a detector can set off the alarm.
Example: a backyard reveal in October
Say your reveal is a Saturday afternoon in a Brampton backyard with 40 guests, including eight young cousins. You set up a white, sage and gold balloon arch against the fence, place a cake table in front of it and keep a garage clear as a rain backup. The bouncy castle goes on the flattest part of the lawn, away from the reveal spot, so the kids can play until the moment arrives. An hour in, everyone gathers, your sister films your faces while a friend films the guests, and you cut the cake together. Afterwards, the photo booth beside the arch fills with families in pink or blue, and guests leave with prints and a story to tell.
When to bring in a rental company
Book décor and rentals once your date and venue are set, ideally four to six weeks ahead, and earlier for spring and summer weekends.
LUNO's balloon arch and décor service designs reveal backdrops in your colours, and we bring photo booths, bouncy castles and party machines to celebrations across the GTA. Contact us with your date, and see our baby shower planning checklist for the next celebration.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a gender reveal party be?
Two to three hours is plenty. Give guests time to arrive, eat and play a guessing game, hold the reveal about an hour in, then leave time for photos and cake afterwards.
Can we hold a gender reveal in a GTA park?
Often, but rules differ by city and by park. Check with your city's parks or permits office about group gatherings, rentals, confetti and smoke products, and plan to leave the space as clean as you found it.
What rentals are most popular for a gender reveal?
A balloon arch or backdrop in neutral colours, a photo booth to capture reactions, and a bouncy castle when young cousins are coming. A popcorn or cotton candy machine is an easy treat for a mixed-age crowd.
