How Much Space Does a Bouncy Castle Need?

The number one question we hear from parents is, "Will it fit?" It's a good question. A castle's listed size is only part of the space it needs. You also need a safety buffer around every side, room for the blower, clear overhead space, a flat surface and a way to get the castle into the yard in the first place. Get those right and setup is quick and safe. Miss one and the castle may not go up at all.

If you're asking yourself "Will it fit?", here's every part of the space a bouncy castle needs, with LUNO's castle sizes and a checklist for your yard, hall or gym. A bouncy castle needs its full footprint plus a clear buffer on every side, overhead clearance above its height, room for the blower, a flat surface and an access route wide enough to bring it in.

    1. Castle footprints

Here are the footprints of LUNO's castles:

    Castle Length Width Height
Adventure Plumber Castle 265 cm 300 cm 205 cm
Adventure Castle 285 cm 350 cm 205 cm
Candy Cane Castle 285 cm 300 cm 230 cm
Racer Castle 285 cm 305 cm 205 cm
Monster Castle 305 cm 340 cm 240 cm
Whimsical Castle 396 cm 244 cm 244 cm

Note the shapes: the Whimsical Castle is long and narrow, which can suit narrow city yards, while the Monster Castle is wide.

If you're not sure which castle to choose, start from your space rather than the theme. Measure first, find the castles that fit and then pick the theme your child likes best from that shortlist. It avoids the disappointment of choosing a castle that turns out to be too big on the day.

    2. The safety buffer

Add a clear buffer zone around every side of the castle, free of fences, walls, furniture, trees and play equipment. The buffer gives kids room to climb out safely and keeps them away from hard edges if they tumble near the entrance. Our team checks the buffer when they set up; when in doubt, more space is better.

When in doubt, send us a photo.

    3. Overhead clearance

Look up. The castle needs clear space above its full height, with nothing that could touch it or drop onto it:

    • Tree branches
    • Overhead wires
    • Pergolas, awnings and gazebos
    • Ceiling fixtures and beams indoors

Indoors, ceiling height is often the deciding factor. See our guide to indoor bouncy castles.

    4. Room for the blower

The blower sits beside or behind the castle and connects through a tube. It needs space so the tube runs straight without kinks, and it should be positioned where kids can't reach the air intake. Plan for the blower and its power cord when you measure.

    5. A flat, clear surface

The castle needs level ground. Grass is ideal because it's soft and allows staking. Patios, driveways and interlock work with sandbags and mats. Avoid slopes, and clear the area of rocks, sticks, toys and anything sharp. Mark sprinkler heads and turn off the sprinkler system before setup.

    6. Access to the setup spot

The castle arrives rolled up and is heavy. Check the route from the vehicle to the spot:

    • Side gate width
    • Steps, slopes and tight corners
    • Laneway access, if any
    • Indoor doors, elevators and hallways for indoor setups

Tell your rental company about anything tight so they can plan.

    7. A measuring checklist

    1. Measure the length and width of the clear area.
    2. Subtract the safety buffer on every side.
    3. Compare what's left with the castle footprints above.
    4. Check overhead clearance against the castle height.
    5. Find the nearest grounded outlet.
    6. Measure the narrowest point on the route in.

Send these numbers, plus a photo, when you book. We'll confirm which castles fit.

Remember the rest of the party when you plan the space. Guests need room to walk around the castle, sit and eat, and the line at the castle entrance shouldn't block the path to the back door or the food table. A quick sketch of the yard with everything placed on it helps.

    8. When space is tight

If your yard is small, consider the most compact castle, a different spot such as the front lawn or driveway (with permission and safety in mind), a relative's yard or an indoor venue. Sometimes the best answer is a different activity, like a popcorn machine or a craft station, and that's fine too.

Example: measuring your yard in ten minutes

Say you have a tape measure and ten minutes. Measure the width and length of the clear area. Subtract a buffer on every side. Compare what's left with the castle sizes in the table. Look up and check for branches and wires. Find the nearest outdoor outlet. Measure the side gate. Take two photos, one of the yard and one of the gate, and send them with your booking. That's everything a rental company needs to tell you which castle fits.

When to bring in a rental company

Send your measurements and photos before you book. A good rental company will tell you honestly which castles fit, or if none do.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the smallest bouncy castle LUNO rents?

Our most compact castle is the Adventure Plumber Castle at 265 x 300 cm, with a height of 205 cm. Add a safety buffer on every side when you measure.

How much clearance do I need above a bouncy castle?

More than the castle's height, with nothing hanging low enough to touch it: no branches, wires, pergolas or ceiling fixtures. Indoors, check the ceiling height carefully.

Does the blower need extra space?

Yes. The blower sits beside or behind the castle and needs room so its tube isn't kinked and kids can't reach the intake. Plan for it when you measure.
