Toronto parents face a challenge that suburban families rarely do: space. Downtown backyards in Leslieville, the Annex, Roncesvalles and Little Italy are often long and narrow, shaded by mature trees and reached through a side passage or a laneway. Out in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, yards are bigger, but parking, access and trees still need planning. Then there are the families in condos and apartments who don't have a yard at all.

A bouncy castle can still be the centrepiece of a Toronto kids' party. If your yard is narrow, shaded or reached through a laneway, here's how to make a castle fit. To rent a bouncy castle in Toronto, measure the yard's width, length and overhead clearance, plan access through the side passage or laneway, confirm power, check park and street parking rules and consider an indoor venue if you don't have a yard.

    1. Measuring a city yard

Downtown Toronto yards are often narrow rather than small. A castle that fits by length may not fit by width once you add a safety buffer. Measure:

    • Width at the narrowest point of the setup area
    • Length, including space in front of the entrance
    • Overhead clearance under trees, wires and pergolas
    • Distance to fences, walls and garden beds

LUNO's most compact castle, the Adventure Plumber Castle, is 265 x 300 cm, and the Racer Castle is 285 x 305 cm. Send us your measurements and we'll suggest what fits. See how much space a bouncy castle needs for the buffer zone.

    2. Getting the castle into the yard

Castles arrive rolled up and are heavy to carry. Downtown homes often have tight side passages between houses, a few steps up or down and sometimes no side access at all. Laneway access through a back gate is often the easiest route if a vehicle can reach it.

Tell us how the backyard is reached: through the house, a side passage or a laneway gate, and how wide each point is. If the only route is through the house, let us know in advance so we can plan.

Front-yard setups are sometimes an option for Toronto homes with small backyards but a flat front lawn. Think carefully about safety near the street and the sidewalk, and keep the castle well back from the road with an adult watching at all times.

    3. Parking for delivery

Street parking in many Toronto neighbourhoods is limited and often restricted by permits or time limits. Save a driveway or parking pad for the delivery vehicle if you have one, and let us know about parking restrictions on your street. If the only option is paid parking, mention it when you book so there are no surprises.

Let us know about any narrow steps on the route, too.

    4. Trees, wires and overhead clearance

Toronto's tree canopy is beautiful and makes shaded yards perfect for summer parties. It also means low branches, and in older neighbourhoods, overhead wires running across yards. The castle needs clear space above its full height, and nothing should hang low enough to touch it.

    5. Power in older homes

Older Toronto homes may have fewer outdoor outlets, and some may not be grounded or may share circuits with the kitchen. The castle's blower runs continuously and needs a grounded outlet on a circuit that won't trip. Check your outdoor outlets before the party, and avoid running other high-draw equipment from the same circuit.

    6. Parks and public spaces

Toronto's parks are tempting when your yard is small, but the City of Toronto sets rules on inflatables, power and organized gatherings, and permits may be required. Most parks have no public power. Check with the city before planning a castle in a park. Rules differ from park to park, so call the city's parks or permits office before you plan.

    7. Indoor options for condo families

If you live in a condo or apartment, indoor venues are usually the answer. Community centre rooms, church halls and some event spaces allow indoor inflatables if the ceiling is high enough and the floor is protected. Condo party rooms rarely do. See our guide to indoor bouncy castles for what to ask venues.

    8. Supervision, weather and booking

An adult should supervise the castle throughout, with shoes off, kids grouped by size and no food inside. The castle must come down in strong wind or storms. Summer weekends fill quickly across Toronto, so book a few weeks ahead, and more for July and August Saturdays. LUNO castles are designed for ages 2 to 6 and are cleaned between rentals.

Example: a narrow Leslieville yard with laneway access

Say your Leslieville backyard is long and narrow, about 4 metres wide, with a back gate onto the laneway. The long, narrow Whimsical Castle (396 x 244 cm) suits that shape better than a wider castle; check that a buffer still fits on each side. Tell the booth company the delivery can come through the laneway gate, and measure the gate width. At $250 for a full day with delivery and setup included, it turns a narrow city yard into the party.

    Frequently asked questions

Will a bouncy castle fit in a downtown Toronto backyard?

Sometimes. Many downtown yards are narrow, so measure the width, length and overhead clearance, and allow a buffer on every side. Our most compact castle is 265 x 300 cm.

Can a castle be delivered through a laneway?

Often, yes, if the laneway is accessible to a vehicle and the back gate is wide enough. Tell us about laneway access when you book.

Do you deliver bouncy castles across Toronto?

Yes, including Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough and the downtown neighbourhoods, with setup and takedown included. Castles are listed at $200 for a full day ($250 for the Whimsical Castle), delivery and setup included; let us know about paid parking at your address.
