Popcorn Machine Rental: A Complete Guide for GTA Parties

Few things make a party feel like a party quite like the smell of fresh popcorn. A popcorn machine is a simple, affordable addition that works at almost any event: kids' birthdays, school fun fairs, movie nights, corporate family days, baby showers and even wedding receptions with a late-night snack table. Guests of every age love it, it doubles as entertainment while it pops and it's far less fuss than a catered snack.
If you want popcorn at your party and aren't sure whether to run the machine yourself or book an operator, here's what to know about renting a popcorn machine anywhere in the GTA. To rent a popcorn machine in the GTA, choose between a self-serve package with supplies and an operator package with unlimited servings, plan a stable table near power and away from play areas and decide how you'll serve.
1. Self-serve or operator?
LUNO offers two ways to rent a popcorn machine:
| Basic package | Premium package | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes the popcorn | You | A LUNO operator |
| Servings | Supplies for up to 50 guests, more available in batches | Unlimited for 3 hours |
| Getting it there | Convenient pickup, or delivery as an add-on | Delivery available as an add-on |
| Price | $175 per machine, plus $60 per extra 50 servings | From $275 for 3 hours, plus $100 per extra hour |
Self-serve is great for smaller home parties where a parent can run the machine. An operator suits larger events, school fairs and corporate days where you'd rather enjoy the party than make popcorn.
2. How many servings you need
Not every guest will have popcorn, but at kids' parties most will, and many will come back for seconds. Estimate your guest count, including adults, and add a buffer. If your party is close to the limit of the basic package, add an extra batch of servings or choose the operator package with unlimited servings.
Popcorn also works well at adult events. Movie-themed birthdays, office events and wedding receptions with a late-night snack table all use popcorn machines, often with flavoured toppings or seasoning shakers. A vintage-style cart looks great in photos and adds to the décor.
3. Space and setup
A popcorn machine needs:
- A sturdy, level table
- A grounded outlet within reach
- Space around it for the operator or a parent to work
- Room for bags or cones, scoops and napkins
- A spot out of direct rain and strong wind if you're outdoors
Place it where guests can line up without blocking doorways or play areas.
4. Power considerations
Popcorn machines draw significant power while heating. Avoid running the machine on the same circuit as a bouncy castle blower, a cotton candy machine or a big sound system, especially outdoors. A tripped breaker at a party means a deflating castle and cold popcorn. If you're renting multiple machines, ask about power needs for each.
5. Safety around kids
The kettle and the glass case get hot. To keep things safe:
- Place the machine on a stable table, not on a wobbly folding table at the edge of the yard
- Keep it away from the bouncy castle, play area and running paths
- Let only adults or the operator handle the kettle and scoop
- Keep cords tucked out of walkways
With these basics, a popcorn machine is one of the easiest rentals to run safely.
6. Serving ideas
- Classic paper bags or striped cones for a carnival feel
- Mini boxes with the party theme or child's name
- A toppings bar with seasonings for adults
- Popcorn as a party favour in labelled bags
For school fairs and fundraisers, popcorn is a reliable seller. See our guide to snack machines for school events and family days.
7. Pairing with other rentals
Popcorn pairs naturally with a cotton candy machine or a shaved ice machine for a full carnival setup. It also works well with a bouncy castle and a balloon arch at kids' parties, or with a photo booth at movie-themed events. Bundling rentals into one delivery is often simpler.
8. Cleaning up
Popcorn gets everywhere. Put the machine on a surface that's easy to sweep, keep a garbage bin close by and have a broom ready. Ask your rental company what cleaning is expected before the machine is returned or picked up.
If you're running the machine yourself, read the instructions before guests arrive and make a test batch. It takes a few minutes for the kettle to heat up, so start early and keep a batch ready before the first rush.
Example: a backyard movie night
Say you're hosting a backyard movie night for 25 kids and parents in Mississauga. The basic package ($175, supplies for up to 50 guests) is plenty, and you can pick the machine up from LUNO in Brampton. Set it on a sturdy table on the patio, near an outlet that isn't shared with the projector. Make a test batch before guests arrive, and serve popcorn in paper bags with each child's name written on them.
