Prints vs Digital Sharing: Which Photo Booth Option Do Guests Use?
The LUNO Events Team
Published · Updated · 5 min read
Ten years ago, the print strip was the whole point of a photo booth. Today most guests have a camera in their pocket and want the photo on their phone before they've left the booth. Yet the printed strip hasn't gone away. At many GTA weddings and family parties, the printer is still the busiest part of the setup.
So which should you pay for? If you're deciding whether prints are worth paying for, here's how different crowds actually use prints and digital sharing, what each adds to your quote and how a guest book changes the picture. Most crowds use both: digital sharing gets photos onto phones and social media instantly, while prints become keepsakes, so offer both if your budget allows and choose based on your guests if it doesn't.
1. How each option works
- Prints: The booth prints a strip or a single photo on the spot, usually within moments. Guests take it home, stick it in a guest book or leave it on the table.
- Digital sharing: Guests send their photos, GIFs or boomerangs to their phone by text, email or QR code. You receive the full set afterwards.
Most modern booths, including LUNO's digital and mirror booths, can do both at once. A 360 booth is digital only.
2. Who reaches for prints
Prints are most popular with:
- Grandparents and older relatives, who may not want to fiddle with a QR code
- Kids, who love holding the result in their hands
- Couples building a photo guest book
- Guests who want a fridge magnet-style reminder of the night
At family-heavy events, such as anniversaries, milestone birthdays and many weddings in Brampton and Vaughan, a print is often the thing people talk about.
3. Who prefers digital
Digital sharing tends to win with:
- Teens and young adults posting to Instagram or TikTok
- Corporate guests who want a branded photo for LinkedIn
- Large events where printing for everyone would slow the line
- Guests who've travelled and don't want to carry anything home
GIFs and boomerangs only exist digitally, and they're often the most-shared output of the night.
4. What each costs you
Prints use paper and ink and take attendant time, so unlimited prints are usually priced higher than digital-only packages.
| Option | What drives the cost | LUNO |
|---|---|---|
| Digital only | Software and sharing setup | Standard package: social media sharing |
| Capped prints | Paper and ink for a set number | Ask on your quote |
| Unlimited prints | Paper, ink and attendant time | Included in Premium and Luxury packages and the LUXE Mirror |
| Photo guest book | Album, extra prints, adhesive and pens | Add-on |
5. The guest book option
A photo guest book combines both worlds. Guests print a second copy of their photo, stick it in an album and write a message beside it. It turns the booth into your guest book, and it's something you'll keep long after the favours are gone.
Plan for a table beside the booth, a few pens and an attendant who nudges guests to sign. An audio guest book, where guests leave a voice message on a vintage phone, is another keepsake option that pairs well with digital sharing.
6. How to choose for your crowd
Ask yourself:
- Will older relatives use the booth?
- Do we want a guest book we'll keep?
- Is this a corporate event where shareable branding matters?
- Is our guest list large enough that printing could slow the line?
If the first two are yes, include prints. If the last two are yes, prioritize digital, with prints for a guest book only.
7. What happens to the photos after the event
Whichever you choose, you'll want every photo afterwards. Ask your booth company:
- How you'll receive the full set: online gallery, USB or both
- How long the gallery stays online, and whether guests can download from it
- Whether the files are full resolution or compressed for phones
Some hosts share the gallery link the morning after in a thank-you text or email. It reaches guests who left early, didn't use the booth or forgot to send photos to their phone, and it's one more reason a digital copy is worth having even when you print.
8. Make the template work in both formats
Whatever you choose, your custom template has to look good both printed and on a phone screen. Keep text large, avoid thin script fonts that blur when printed and test the design on your phone. Our overlay guide has more tips.
Example: a mixed crowd at a Diwali party
Say you're hosting a Diwali party with three generations of family and a crowd of teenage cousins. The elders will want a print to take home, the cousins will want boomerangs on their phones within seconds and you'll want everything in a gallery afterwards. A digital booth with prints and instant sharing covers all three. If you want to save on prints, cap them at one per group and leave digital sharing unlimited. Add a photo guest book, and the second prints become a keepsake album too.
When to bring in a booth company
Tell your booth company who's on your guest list and whether you want a guest book. They can suggest the right mix, and quote prints and digital separately so you can compare.
LUNO's digital photo booth rental supports prints, digital sharing, GIFs and photo guest books, delivered from Brampton to areas across the GTA. If you're still choosing a booth type, read 360 photo booth vs digital photo booth first, because only one of them prints.

Frequently asked questions
Can guests get both a print and a digital copy?
Yes, with most digital and mirror booths. Guests print their strip and send a copy to their phone at the same time. Ask whether both are included in your package.
Do 360 booths offer prints?
No. A 360 booth produces video, which is shared digitally. If prints matter, add a digital or mirror booth or a photo guest book.
How do guests receive digital photos?
Usually by scanning a QR code, entering a phone number for a text, or entering an email. After the event, you typically receive every photo in an online gallery or on a USB.
