The December family party is often the only time all year that every branch of the family is in one place. Grandparents arrive early, cousins who live across the GTA finally meet each other's kids, and the house or hall is full from the afternoon until late. It's also a party where the host barely sits down, and where nobody remembers to take the one photo everyone will want next year.

If you're hosting Christmas Eve dinner, a Boxing Day open house, a New Year's Eve family night or a holiday get-together for a large family, here's how to plan the space, the photos and the extras that keep every generation happy. For a family holiday party in the GTA, book early for December dates, plan one place for group photos, give the kids something to do away from the kitchen, keep treats simple and choose rentals that fit your space and ceiling height.

    1. Lock in the date early

December is busy for everyone: venues, caterers and rental companies are booked for office parties, and families compete for the same weekends. Once your date is set, book anything you need, including a party room, décor or a photo booth.

If relatives are still settling on a date, send your rental company two or three options. It's easier to hold the one that's free than to start over in mid-December.

    2. Plan the space around the crowd

Family parties often mix toddlers, teenagers and grandparents in one home or party room. Before guests arrive, decide on:

    • A quiet zone with comfortable seating for older relatives, away from speakers
    • A kids' area that's visible from the main room but away from the stove and hot drinks
    • A photo spot with good light, room for a group and a plain or festive background
    • Coat and boot storage so the entrance doesn't become a bottleneck

In a condo party room or a rented hall, check the end time and any rules on décor, candles and music before you plan the evening.

    3. Make the group photo happen

Every family has the photo it means to take and never does. A photo booth solves that by turning photos into part of the party. Grandparents get prints to take home, cousins get photos on their phones, and the attendant can gather each household for its own shot.

A digital booth fits most homes and party rooms, while the LUXE Mirror booth (often called a magic mirror) suits a larger hall and gives full-length photos in holiday outfits. LUNO's booth packages start from $800 for 3 hours, with an attendant, setup and teardown included. Ask about a holiday template with your family name and the year, which turns every print into a keepsake.

    4. Give the kids their own fun

Children at a long family party need something better to do than circle the dinner table. A craft table, a short movie and a few board games go a long way. If you've rented a gym or large hall, an indoor bouncy castle can be the highlight of the day.

Ceiling height is the deciding factor indoors. LUNO's castles stand between 205 cm and 244 cm tall, and they need clear space above that, so most home basements won't work. Our indoor bouncy castle guide explains what to measure.

    5. Keep the treats easy

The kitchen is already busy at a holiday party, so add treats that run themselves. A popcorn or cotton candy machine gives kids and adults something to snack on between meals. LUNO's basic machine package is $175 per machine with supplies for up to 50 guests, and pickup is available if you'd rather collect it yourself.

    6. Decorate one statement spot

Instead of decorating every room, focus on one place: behind the dessert table, the photo spot or the entrance. A balloon garland in red and gold, silver and white, or your own family colours makes the space feel finished and gives photos a backdrop. LUNO designs balloon arches and garlands, quoted per event with installation included.

    7. Think about every generation

A few small touches help everyone enjoy the day:

    • Seat grandparents where they can see the action without being in the way
    • Keep the music at a level where people can talk
    • Ask teens to help run a game or the photo props
    • Plan a moment for any traditions, such as a prayer, a toast or opening gifts, before the youngest guests get tired

Example: a Boxing Day open house

Say you're hosting 60 relatives on Boxing Day in a rented community hall. You book the hall and a digital photo booth in October, with a template showing your family name and "Holiday 2026". You set the booth beside a red and gold balloon garland near the entrance, so every family stops for a photo as they arrive. The cousins have a craft table and a movie corner, and a popcorn machine keeps everyone snacking until dinner. By the end of the afternoon, every household has its own print, and you finally have the whole-family photo.

When to bring in a rental company

Book rentals once your date and venue are confirmed, ideally in the fall, and send a few possible dates if your family hasn't settled on one.

    Frequently asked questions

When should we book rentals for a family holiday party?

As soon as the date is set. December weekends are busy across the GTA, so early fall is ideal. If you're booking in November, send two or three possible dates and ask which are still open.

Is a photo booth worth it for a family party at home?

Often, yes, when relatives from several households are together. It gives you group photos you'd otherwise miss, prints grandparents can take home, and something for teens to do. LUNO's booth packages start from $800 for 3 hours.

Can a bouncy castle work at a winter party?

Only indoors, in a space with enough ceiling height, such as a gym or a large hall. Most home basements are too low. Measure the space and read our indoor castle guide before booking.
