Balloon Garland vs Balloon Arch: Which Suits Your Space?

When people say "balloon arch", they often mean any balloon décor that curves. But there's an important difference between a free-standing arch and a balloon garland. An arch stands on its own frame, creating a doorway or a frame you can walk through or stand under. A garland is a flexible strand of balloons that drapes across a backdrop, a table, a doorway or a wall. Both look great, but they suit different spaces and events.
If you're not sure whether your space needs a balloon garland or a full arch, here's how they compare for your party, shower or event in the GTA. Choose a balloon arch when you have floor space and want a walk-through entrance or a framed focal point; choose a balloon garland for tight spaces, tables, walls and backdrops, or when you want colour without a big footprint.
1. What each one is
| Balloon arch | Balloon garland | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Free-standing frame | Flexible strand, attached or draped |
| Footprint | Needs floor space on both sides | Minimal floor space |
| Look | Bold, framed, architectural | Flowing, organic, versatile |
| Best for | Entrances, stages, photo spots | Tables, walls, backdrops, doorways |
Many events use both: an arch at the entrance and a garland on the cake table.
2. When an arch makes sense
Choose an arch when you want:
- A dramatic entrance guests walk through
- A frame around a stage, head table or photo spot
- A focal point in a large hall or outdoor space
- Height and presence that fills a big room
Arches need clear floor space on both sides and enough height. They suit banquet halls, gyms, large backyards and corporate venues.
3. When a garland makes sense
Choose a garland when you want:
- Colour on a cake or dessert table
- Décor around a doorway without blocking it
- A backdrop for a photo booth or photo wall
- Something that works in a small room
Garlands are the natural choice for condo party rooms, restaurant private rooms and living rooms. See our guide to balloon décor for Toronto condos and party rooms.
Think about how guests will move through the space. An arch at an entrance works only if it's wide enough for guests, strollers and wheelchairs to pass through comfortably, and it shouldn't create a bottleneck at the door. A garland around a doorway avoids the issue entirely, which is why many venues with narrow entrances prefer it.
4. Setup and attachment
Arches are built on a frame that stands on its own, weighted at the base. Garlands need something to attach to: a backdrop frame, hooks, a table edge or removable wall strips. Many venues, including most condos and banquet halls, don't allow anything taped or nailed to walls, so ask first. A backdrop frame solves the problem in most venues.
Garlands are also easier to adjust on site: they can be shortened, extended or reshaped if the room turns out different from the plan.
5. Indoors and outdoors
Both are happiest indoors. Outdoors, an arch's frame catches wind and needs firm anchoring; a garland draped along a fence or pergola is more sheltered. In either case, heat and sun shorten the life of latex balloons, so install close to the event and choose shaded spots.
6. Photos
Both make great photo backdrops. An arch frames people standing beneath it; a garland across a backdrop panel creates a full photo wall. If you're booking a photo booth, tell your décor company so the balloons are placed and sized for the camera.
Consider how long the décor needs to last. A garland draped over a fireplace or stair railing at home can stay up for a day or two of family visits after a party. A free-standing arch in a rented hall usually comes down the same night, along with everything else.
7. Cost considerations
Garlands often cost less than arches because they use fewer balloons and no free-standing frame, but a long, dense garland can approach the cost of an arch. Ask for quotes on both options for your space. LUNO quotes balloon décor based on size, complexity and customization, with installation included.
8. Quick decision guide
- Large hall entrance: Arch
- Cake or dessert table: Garland
- Photo booth backdrop: Garland on a backdrop frame, or a half arch
- Condo party room: Garland
- Backyard party: Garland along a fence or a well-anchored arch
- Corporate stage: Arch or columns
Whichever you choose, send photos of the space and its walls, doorways and tables. It's the quickest way for a décor company to recommend the right option and size.
Example: a narrow restaurant room
Say you're hosting a bridal shower in a narrow restaurant room in Streetsville, with tables running the length of the room. A free-standing arch would block the walkway, so choose a garland across a backdrop frame at the end of the room, behind the bride's chair. It adds colour, creates a photo spot and takes up almost no floor space. If you also want something at the door, a small garland around the entrance frame works without blocking anyone.
When to bring in a rental company
Send photos and measurements of your space, along with your colours and theme. We'll recommend an arch, a garland or both.

Frequently asked questions
Is a balloon garland cheaper than an arch?
Often, because garlands usually use fewer balloons and no free-standing frame. Pricing depends on length, density and colours. LUNO quotes both for your space.
Can a garland be hung on a wall without damage?
Garlands are usually attached with hooks, removable strips or a backdrop frame. Ask your venue what's allowed; many halls and condos don't allow anything taped to walls.
Which is better for a small condo party room?
Usually a garland. It sits flat against a wall or table, takes up very little floor space and still adds a lot of colour.
